A septic system consists of two parts: the tank that holds and treats the sewage and the drain field where the wastewater is safely filtered back into the groundwater. Signs of a drain field problem include standing water, unpleasant odors and one area of the grass being more green and lush than those surrounding it.
When there are septic field problems, they could be occurring for a number of reasons. Maybe tree roots are crushing pipes or the weight of a car parked over the field is messing up the balance. When problems occur, the owner has to make the decision whether to have an expert do drain field repair or replacement.
Repair versus replace
A rule of thumb is that a septic system should last at least twenty years, but this rarely happens unless regular maintenance is done. After the twenty-year mark, if any of the major parts is broken, it’s usually best to have the entire system broken, but if the system is younger than twenty years, drain field repair is generally the best option unless the problem is large.
Inspection
If you know that you are having problems, but you aren’t sure whether to repair or replace, turn to a firm that does drain field inspections. They will inspect the entire system and be able to let you know what your best option is. Look for an experienced team.
