The Process Of Internal Grinding

by | Aug 9, 2019 | Tool Grinding Service

Machining centers and processes can be used to create shapes on a wide range of workpieces that can be either cylindrical or conical in shape. While precision is necessary for this external or outer diameter grinding, there is a greater challenge with internal grinding requirements .

The Basics

Inner diameter grinding or ID grinding is used to remove small amounts of larger amounts of the workpiece on the inside diameter of the metal or plastic part. It requires precision work to set up the CNC equipment to allow the grinding to be completed to meet exacting tolerances needed in any type of industry or application.

In addition to grinding out holes or bores in a workpiece, internal grinding is also used to create internal tapers or to create faces on the internal sides of the part. These different options for ID grinding are often required for OEMs in the manufacturing of specific types of parts and components in the automotive, aerospace, military and defense and manufacturing industries.

Equipment and Technology

Using CNC technology, machining companies are able to provide precision ID grinding even with complex configurations required. The technology or the CNC system and software are important, but so is the selection of the right equipment, grinding tool, and system setup.

Experienced grinding services are able to offer precision internal grinding and still provide cost-effective production options. It is always critical for the OEM to consider the volume requirements of some shops, and many of the larger production companies required high volume orders and do not provide precision ID grinding services for prototyping or small volume orders.

Companies offering a focus on quality control, completing orders to the customer’s timeline, and providing the most cost-effective options in ID grinding services are not always easy to find, but they offer the best solution for any production requirements.
