From Almshouse to Assisted Living: A Brief History of Senior Care

by | Aug 12, 2019 | Assisted Living

Designed to provide comfortable housing for adults as they age or recuperate, senior care has come a long way since its humble beginnings in the 17th century. Learn more below!

Piggybacking off the Middle Ages practice of almshouses (where the financially destitute and mentally unwell could seek solace), boarding homes grew in popularity throughout the 19th century. Once public knowledge grew of the often despicable living conditions of housing, convalescent homes promised better care for a fee. As doctors noticed the frequency of hospital visits by older patients, these board-and-care facilities began to cater specifically to the elderly and the infirm. With a boost from federal oversight and funding throughout the 1970s, the nursing homes that we now know slowly began to take shape.

While the medical and mental health needs of residents differ, the ultimate aim of elderly care is to support the health and autonomy of our loved ones as they age. Rather than suffer the indignity of losing their independence, nursing homes provide a safe and comfortable living space with a range of integrated services and support. Those who can no longer care for themselves need not struggle alone, nor suffer the pain of losing their faculties in their own home. Instead, each resident receives the care and support (s)he needs to age gracefully in peace.

At Inglemoor Rehabilitation & Care Center, we provide both long- and short-term housing for the elderly and infirm. Having served the community of Livingston, New Jersey, for over 50 years, our reputation for compassionate care has ensured the integrity and health of every resident who passes through our doors.
