Choices Abound When Choosing a Custom Door

Whether you are building your dream house or remodeling your current home, you have a huge list of things to think about. Aside from practicalities like scheduling and budget, you also have a number of aesthetic and design decisions to make. One thing you may not have considered is the kind of doors you want in your home. If you are designing your house to meet your specifications, you don’t have to go with the standard hinged door with six inset panels that you can get at any hardware store. Ordering a custom door allows you to get a door that meets your exact specifications in terms of size, function, and design.

One of the main things to consider when ordering a custom door is how you want it to open and close. This is largely determined by the room in which the door will be used and the amount of floor space around it. Of course, the aesthetics of the room are also a contributing factor. One type of door is a bi-fold door, often used for closets. These doors open up in the middle and fold back on hinges. Because they fold in half, when open, they take up far less room on either side of the door frame. Bi-fold doors are usually mounted from a track at the top of the door frame and they can be solid or louvered. The biggest disadvantage to these doors is that they do not offer as much privacy because of the hinges in the middle of the door. For this reason, they are not generally used for bedrooms, bathrooms, or other spaces where you want a little more seclusion.

Another type of custom door to consider is a pocket door. These doors, which first became popular during the Victorian period, are coming back into style in contemporary homes. These doors are mounted on sliding tracks and recess into the interior of the wall, meaning that no floor space is taken up by the door when it is open. It also greatly opens up the space between rooms, which is a huge advantage if you have a small home or an open floor plan. The greatest disadvantage of this type of door is that it can be difficult to install since you have to create a pocket inside the wall.

Another style you might consider for your custom door is a barn door. Like pocket doors, barn doors take up no floor space since they are mounted on sliding tracks. Instead of sliding into the wall, barn doors lie flush against the wall. Barn doors do not have to look like they came from a country hoe-down; sleek, modern barn doors are becoming popular in contemporary home design.

These are just a few types of custom door to consider. The choices are endless, and you are sure to find something that is as unique and beautiful as the rest of your home.
